They'll never use their Wii again

Post by DigDog on Fri Jul 13, 2012 1:35 am

It's time for my niece and nephew to witness some oldschool goodness, so I'm setting up my laptop as an 8/16-bit console emulator. You know, connected to TV, USB gamepad, that jazz. All that's left is getting all the good games.

I'm pretty sure I covered most of them, but just to be sure:

ITT: List your favourite oldschool console games from the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis(Mega Drive) or Sega Master System

Why are you making them play oldschool games?
Spoiler:
The majority if not all of those games were Nintendo 64, rob.

Legend of Zelda (NES)
Kirby (NES)
The Lone Ranger (NES)
Castlevania (NES)
Super Mario Bros (NES)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Duck Hunt (NES) You'll need the gun for that one
Super Mario Bros 2 (NES) A.K.A. Doki Doki Panic
Throw in some Sonic games from Sega

I think he's making them play because old school games were actually good compared to the weak games that his nephew/nieces normally play today on the Wii. Nintendo has dumbed itself down, admittedly.

Because they're better than a lot of the games that are on the market nowadays. Basically what Erik said.

Hey Erik, Chrono Trigger is SNES.

Megaman 2-4(1 is impossible for the young ones of today, and 5+ aren't as good), NES
Snake Rattle 'n Roll, NES(it's a 2 player too!)
Donkey Kong Country(any of 'em will do), SNES
Mega Turrican, Genesis
Kirby Superstar, Snes

Of course I got other games that I'm fond of, but they tend to be RPG's and so on and I figure these kids are better off with games that don't take hours of grinding for levels and so on. On that note, bad Robaldo, bad.

I like this idea of hooking up my old NES and dusting off my terrible collection of crap. Screw your mainstream games, I'm going to make my younger siblings HATE the older generation!

- Back To the Future
- The Goonies II
- Daydreaming Davey
- Ghostbusters
- Blades of Steel (not bad, but they're gonna wish that they had a new sports game instead)
- Zelda II (this as well for extra frustration on their part, because :condi:)

Here are my picks for the SNES. I started with that because I actually own an SNES.

I want to direct your attention at the lower right corner where the RPGs reside. If you haven't played all of them, you missed out on some very good RPGs. Just saying.

I just noticed I have Secret of Evermore in the RPG section but Secret of Mana is not. I'm too lazy to take another screenshot though.

In case I missed a good SNES game, tell me.

And now, on to the next console.

A lot of those games will be really hard for young kids. I havent played the majority of them because I am neither in my 30s or a hipster, but I have heard a lot.
I'm actually playing FF3 right now on my DS, and it's very open and non-linear, but with specific parts that need to be done before you can continue. A lot of them are easy to miss too.
You should maybe look through them and take into the account the difficulty and remove some from the list.

Also I dunno if you're keeping them captive or not but how the hell are they going to have the time to play all of those games?

Attention span, I guess. They'll go through the games like a wildfire goes through an orphanage. Also, I think you should remove all RPG's from your list. Kids that age don't want walls of text, no matter how good of a RPG game it is in your opinion.

A lot of those games will be really hard for young kids.
They might, but you might also be underestimating the gaming skills of kids. Plus from what I've seen they have quite some endurance. They're not set back too much from a death, they just try again and again. They're not casuals.

how the hell are they going to have the time to play all of those games?
I don't care if they're able to play all of them, I just like them to have options.

Also, I think you should remove all RPG's from your list. Kids that age don't want walls of text, no matter how good of a RPG game it is in your opinion.
See that RPG folder? I put them in a seperate folder for a reason. I might or might not have downloaded them so I can play them myself.

Final Fantasy for the NES was all kinds of :V for me when I was young. Now that I'm older and realize that it uses a Usage Spell per Level system, it still is :psyduckcripes:

Along with Tim, newer games are much easier than the older games for the most part. Remember that when recommending tougher games to them.

Also,

Silver Surfer (NES) Quality game there if they are willing to accept an occasional defeat ;) (hehehe)

I'd rather step on puppies than play Silver Surfer. Anyway.

Chip&Dales Rescue Rangers, NES(2 player!)
Life Force, NES(Gradius-like, I recall it has simultaneous 2-player too)
Journey to Silius, NES

Mother 3 is also a good GBA RPG but it's not retro so I excluded it earlier.

Finally got around completing my NES list.

Once again there's an RPG folder that might or might not just for me, not for the kids.

Also added Terranigma to the SNES RPG section. How could I forget that game, seriously.
