Re: Books!

Post by Pyronix on Sun May 31, 2009 7:19 pm

I've loved reading books since I was a kid.

I think the last books i read were the eragon series (yes, before the movie came out)

I was one of those hooligans that turned nerdish when he read the harry potter series, by the way. XD

Finished the last book in 2 days, I actually did'nt go to bed at all the second day.

I like reading more than juts fantasy books though, sometimes I read horror books (Stephen king), sometimes I read books on gang life (my bloody life), and other times I like go0d sob story (a child called it, saddest book you will ever read, period).

My all time favorites are the harry potter series, the golden compass series, and the eragon series.

Post by Juliana on Mon Jul 13, 2009 2:06 pm

Really, Copisgam? Can you recite from Dr. Seuss off of the top of your head?

"Now, the news just came in from the county of Keck
That a very small bug by the name of Van Vleck
Was yawning so wide you can look down his neck.
This may not seem very important, I know,
But it is, so I'm bothering telling you so.

A yawn is quite catching, you see, like a cough.
It just takes one yawn to start other yawns off.
Now the news has come in that some friends of Van Vleck's
Are yawning so wide you can look down their necks!
At this moment, right now, under seven more noses,
Great yawns are in blossom! They're blooming like roses!

The yawn of that one little bug is still spreading.
According to latest reports, it is heading
Across the wide fields, through the sleepy night air
Across the whole country to every-which-where!
And people are gradually starting to say,
'I feel rather drowsy. I've had quite a day.'"
-The Dr. Seuss Sleep Book

"Oh, I wish I could do as they do in Katroo.
They sure know how to say Happy Birthday To You.
In Katroo, every year, on the day you were born,
They start the day right in the bright early morn
When the Birthday Honk-Honker hikes high up Mount Zorn
And lets loose a big blast on the Big Birthday Horn.
And the voice of the Horn calls out loud as it plays,
'Wake up! For today is your day of all days.'

The moment the horn's happy honk-honk is heard,
Comes a fluttering flap-flap! And then comes the bird!
The Great Birthday Bird! Now, as far as I know,
Katroo is the only place Birthday Birds grow.
This bird has a brain. He's most beautifully brained
With the brainiest bird-brain that's ever been trained!
He was trained by the most splendid club in this nation,
The Katroo Happy Birthday Asso-see-eye-ation.
And whether your name is Pete, Polly, or Paul,
When your birthday comes 'round, he's in charge of it all."
-Happy Birthday To You by Dr. Seuss

That's just the first two pages of each. I've still got most of the rest memorized, despite not having seen either book for several years. These are my two favorites, so I read them a few thousand times each when I was very, very little and first learned to read. Ah, good times, good times.

But there's good books around for much bigger people too! ;) There's a really good one I found recently, called "Gods of Manhattan." It's about this boy who can see the spirit city of memories that coexists with New York City, and it's very funny.

And as far as manga go, I've gotten very into one called "Alice 19th." I loved the whole series, particularly the way it ended. Seven amazing books.

Re: Books!

Post by Deathclaws on Mon Nov 30, 2009 4:40 am

Books I recommend:

As always, I recommend the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, creator of the "cthulhu" mythos. You can get about 350 pages of short stories etc. for a mere 18 bucks

Also, a book almost unknown in the USA
"The 13.5 lives of captain bluebear"
Walter Moers,a german author, always manages to get on the top rated list of "spiegel" (the most influential and un-biased monthly news magazine in the german region) after he creates a new book (which happens about once every 3 years). I have never before seen so much detail, great story and especially ORIGINALITY, packed into 700 pages. Excellent read.
Still, I think his 3rd book City of Dreaming Books is by far his best.

"The Chronicles of Malus Darkblade"
Sadism at its best, lotsa gore but a great storyline set in the warhammer universe. For all you Druchii-Fans, a must read

The ninja handbook
Now this is for all you youtubers out there. Most of you probably know the youtube-award winning "ASK A NINJA" series. Well, he decided to write a flippin-awesome book about ninjas. And you better prepare some scrolls....

"Whats the worst that could happen"
Excellent, neutral view on global warming, which just suggests HOW to think ABOUT the whole global warming debate. It offers you logical options, YOU draw the conclusions. Written by a science teacher who managed to get 7 million total views on youtube, just because he made a great global warming video, this book is just worth the time you need to read its few hundred pages
"The most terrifying video you'll ever see"

POPULAR BOOKS I DO NOT RECOMMEND:

Twilight, but just for the males:
Your girlfriend had you read this book? Yeah, I know that story. Good lord, the dialogue is weak, the story is predictable beyond belief, and its copied too. Noone writes a GOOD BOOK in half a year. Get some niveau girls, read something NEW, not a book suggesting "no sex before marriage". Its so darn conservative. The popularity of this series has shown me once again - humanity is nearing the "idiocracy" state of mind.

Eragon, both for the females and males.
Its a rip off. try comparing the shire to the starting point of eragon. try comparing the battle for minas tirith (or was it helms deep?) to the underground battle in the dwarven kingdom. The first book managed to aggrevate me, the second managed to bore me, I skipped the third, which was probably one of the best ideas I ever had (excluding the one where I finally managed to find a drink that cures my hangovers)

While I was away on a boat trip, I read a book a day, each were the odd 500+ pages long and small text. About 5 - 6 cm thick.
